The OIFR Safety Committee, consisting of Safety Officer Bob Nutt, Volunteer Lt. Greg Sawyer, Capt. Don Swain and Chief Holly vanSchaick have been awarded a $25,000 grant for new firefighter bunker gear (also known as turnouts) through the Department of Labor and Industries Firefighter Injury Illness Reduction Program (FIIRE).

VIDEO: Spokane firefighters were called to a fire in someone's backyard last week, saying the fire was made worse by their choice in shrubbery.
All that's left are burnt branches which were once arborvitae, a popular but problematic plant. It's known to easily ignite and torch, leaving a burnt scene dangerously close to multiple homes.

One person was injured after a boat caught fire on City Island Tuesday just before 6 p.m.
The small powerboat sunk in the Long Island Sound shortly after firefighters were able to get the blaze under control. The boat was just off the fuel dock at 673 City Island Avenue in the Bronx when it went up in flames.

VIDEO: First responders can now make use of a new state law meant to help with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Senate Bill 24 includes PTSD as an occupational disease when diagnosed in first responders and establishes benefits under workers' compensation. The bill states there is no physical injury required for a first responder to receive benefits.
