That means drivers paying attention through school zones and the constant need for more crossing guards.
This year, the Unified Police and Unified Fire departments are getting creative to get the word out.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Upwards of 5,000 residents have been displaced due to the devastating fire burning southwest of Spokane.
The Gray fire began around noon on Friday, prompting evacuations in the communities of Medical Lake and Four Lakes. The areas, less than 20 miles southwest of Spokane, have a combined population of more than 5,000.

VIDEO: Crews fighting the Gray Fire since Friday start and end their days at Cheney Middle School. They're working tirelessly through the heavy smoke, wind and flames to save what's left of the Medical Lake Community.
Fire crews say the Gray Fire is a tough and challenging fire to fight. After long shifts they come to the middle school and either sleep in tents or inside classrooms.

VIDEO: Pierce County has seen one of the most active brush fire seasons this year in western Washington.
Graham Fire & Rescue responded to two brush fires within three days. One of those brush fires burned three acres of land on someone’s property on Saturday along Highway 7. The flames destroyed the owner’s RV, multiple cars, and an outbuilding.

Huge flames destroyed several businesses in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.
A massive plume of smoke could be seen rising from the 6-alarm fire on Lee Avenue in Williamsburg on Sunday afternoon. Firefighters arrived at the scene four minutes after the initial call just before noon Sunday. Officials say the flames appeared to start in a chocolate shop and spread to at least nine nearby retail stores.
