36 years ago: Northwest Flight 255 crashes after takeoff at Detroit Metro Airport, killing 156

VIDEO: Wednesday marks 35 years since the deadliest plane crash in Michigan history. On August 16, 1987, Northwest Flight 255 took off from Romulus headed for Arizona — it didn’t make it far. Investigators blame a number of pilot errors on the crash, but the most important takeaway is the lives lost: 156 people were killed that day, all but one person on board and two people who were in vehicles near I-94 and Middlebelt Road.

Battery storage safety incidents guide for first responders published by American Clean Power Association

The American Clean Power Association (ACP) has launched a new guide aimed at helping first responders understand and deal with battery storage safety incidents. Including recommendations for pre-incident planning and incident response, the guide addresses potential hazards such as fire, explosions, arc flash, shock and toxic chemicals.

Underground fire breaks out at wastewater treatment plant in Woodinville

A fire broke out underground at the Brightwater Treatment plant in Woodinville. Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue said the fire started as employees were fusing plastic piping on Tuesday. The fire shot down pipes 60 feet below ground. According to Snohomish Fire, the fire is now contained. King County said in a blog post no one was injured during the fire, although two employees were evaluated by medics.

Sourdough fire reaches nearly 3,000 acres, 11% contained

The Sourdough fire in the North Cascades has grown to nearly 3,000 acres as of Tuesday. According to the daily update from the National Park Service, the fire is currently burning 2952 acres and is 11% contained. More than 400 firefighters are on the scene, as well as 20 fire engines and seven helicopters.

Wisconsin fire department creates 'flex farms' to address community need

VIDEO: Milwaukee firefighters have found another way to help the community, using their green thumbs to grow fresh food year round. It's part of a pilot program called "Gardens for First Responders," but fire crews aren't the only ones getting their hands in the soil. "I knew that our community needed growth; I knew we had food deserts," said Andre Lee Ellis with Community Agricultural Growing Experiences.
