Akron, like many state and local governments, has used recent federal stimulus windfalls to grow its cash reserves during a pandemic that didn't hurt income tax receipts in the city the way some had feared. Finance Director Steve Fricker has managed a cash reserve in the general fund that's nearly tripled since 2020.

Two South Carolina volunteer firefighters prove age is just a number

VIDEO: Two volunteer firefighters in Laurens County are proving that age is just a number. Jean Swanson and Ann Jenkins have a combined 62 years of volunteering at the Hickory Tavern Fire Department. “Dedicated. Loving. Friends,” said Chief Lance Roper. Swanson joined the department 44 years ago. Since then, her husband and son have served as chief.

US probing Virginia fatal crash involving Tesla suspected of running on automated driving system

U.S. auto safety regulators have sent a team to investigate a fatal crash in Virginia involving a Tesla suspected of running on a partially automated driving system. The latest crash, which occurred in July, brings to 35 the number of Tesla crashes under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since June of 2016.

Encampment fire causes major smoke plume to rise above downtown Seattle

VIDEO: An encampment fire caused a massive plume of smoke to rise above downtown Seattle Monday afternoon. The fire sparked in an encampment at Mercer Street near Fairview, close to an Interstate 5 onramp. Eastbound lanes of Mercer Street were blocked while firefighters worked on the scene. There were no injuries reported and firefighters did not find anyone in the encampment.

West Pierce firefighters respond to more brush fires this year than all of 2022

With these searing weather conditions, firefighters are standing by for anything that sparks, and they are not having to wait very long for the next call. This is the first day of this heatwave, and we are already seeing fires spark across the region. FOX 13 News interviewed West Pierce Fire & Rescue at about noon Monday.
