Missouri school one of first in the nation to add color-coded security system to help first responders

VIDEO: A Hazelwood school is one of the first elementary schools in the country to install a color-coded security measure designed to guide first responders in times of crisis. “If, unfortunately, something were to happen, having that system, people will know where to go quickly,” said Hazelwood Assistant Superintendent Christopher Norman.

Beach in New York reopens after crews spend morning scanning for sharks

VIDEO: Rockaway Beach reopened for swimming and surfing Wednesday after officials spent the morning scanning for sharks. "Drone and harbor unit surveillance this morning did not observe any shark sightings, and Rockaway Beach has reopened for swimming as of 10 a.m. NYC Parks, NYPD, and FDNY will continue land, drone, and boat surveillance on Rockaway Beach throughout the day and into the evening," the Parks Department tweeted.

Florida firefighters help paralyzed woman stranded in 31st-floor apartment

VIDEO: Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue workers went beyond the call of duty to help a woman with special needs get to her 31st-floor apartment. Floodwaters recently shut down her building’s elevator, and that’s when the first responders stepped in to help. The three firefighters will say they were just doing their jobs, but their job was not easy.

Sourdough Fire: SR 20 North Cascades Hwy reopens

State Route 20 North Cascades Highway reopened Wednesday after closing for several days due to the wildfire activity from the Sourdough Fire. The road was closed Friday night between milepost 120 in Newhalem and milepost 156 near Rainy Day Pass, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Washington Department of Natural Resources fighting fires faster with increased resources

If you have seen airplanes drop water at a wildfire this year, they're probably from Deer Park. Deer Park Fire Pilot Chris Hopman has fought fires in the air for six years. Unlike previous years, he has noticed his team is able to keep fires from growing to almost 10 times in size this season. "Instead of us catching fires that let's say 10 or 20 acres, you're looking at 10 to 20,000 acres on some of them, so with this initial rapid response, we're able to keep them much smaller," Hopman said.
