For one Montecito, CA, man who was trapped in his home when mudslides ravaged his neighborhood, nothing represents the sacrifices of first responders better than a pair of shoes.
The kicks mysteriously showed up at his front door months after he gave them to a barefoot firefighter.
In the hour after a mudslide tore through Kevin Rittner's home, he signaled for help with a flashlight.

The vision of two Eagle Scout candidates, a memorial to first responders was dedicated last Wednesday at the park between East Main Street and East Young Street in Elma.
“This memorial was an Eagle Scout project of two scouts from Troop 14 of Elma: Evan Werner and Matt Kimbrel,” said Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers, one of many local law enforcement officers who attended the afternoon ceremony.

Tri-Cities citizens can be first responders thanks to the release of a new safety app that can help during a cardiac arrest.
The PulsePoint app officially launched Monday morning at a press conference, but has been available for a couple of weeks.
Representatives from Richland Fire Department, Kadlec Regional Medical Center and Lourdes Health introduced the device at the press conference.
