Spokane man missing and presumed dead at Palouse Falls

A Spokane man is missing and presumed dead after Franklin County sheriff's deputies say he did not surface from the water under Palouse Falls. Franklin County officials received reports at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday that a 23-year-old man was sucked under the raging waterfall while swimming with his friends.

Spokane Valley Firefighters and Red Cross team up to install hundreds of smoke alarms

Spokane Valley Firefighters and volunteers took time on Saturday Morning to make sure homes were properly equipped with smoke alarms. They tested existing alarms and installing new ones as needed "It's a unique opportunity for us to try an make a difference," said Rick Freier with the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

Thousands of Firefighters Head to Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (RTV6) - More than 30,000 firefighters from around the world packed downtown Indianapolis on Monday for the annual Fire Department Instructors Conference.

The firefighters will spend all week learning the latest in firefighting technology in an expo held at the expanded Indiana Convention Center and the floor of Lucas Oil Stadium.

City tourism officials said the FDIC is one of the top five most lucrative conventions that Indianapolis hosts, bringing a $30 million economic impact to the Circle City, RTV6's Tanya Spencer reported.

Firefighters’ Conference Returns to Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (FOX59) - It's that time of year! You'll soon see thousands of firefighters from across the country converge on downtown Indianapolis for the annual Fire Department Instructor's Conference, or FDIC.

We spoke with FDIC Education Director Bobby Halton about what's in store for this year's event.

Co-op loan for fire truck questioned

The $360,000 given for the vehicle was not in the form of a “grant,” but a zero-interest loan from the cooperative to Mount Airy which will be repaid.

And the money is not from co-op funds, Martin further reminded, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program. It provides funding to rural counties through local utility organizations such as Surry-Yadkin.

Such assistance mainly is designed for projects that that will create and retain employment, but also can be used for community-development purposes involving non-profit entities and public bodies. The USDA enlists electric co-ops as clearinghouses for such grants for a logical reason.
