PHMSA proposes all railroads must alert first responders within 10 miles of derailed train cargo under new rule

Federal regulators want first responders to know exactly what they are dealing with before reaching the scene of a train derailment, because the dangerous chemicals trains carry might require a specialized response. The Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration proposed a new rule last Wednesday that would require all railroads to immediately send the details of everything aboard their trains to every emergency responder within 10 miles, as soon as the railroad becomes aware of an accident.

How Arizona firefighters keep cool while working in the summer

VIDEO: With the scorching summer here, Valley firefighters are not only battling fires but the oppressive heat while doing so. “When we are dealing with 110 degrees, and a fire kicks out, we are asked to act,” said Captain Dave Folio with the Scottsdale Fire Department. Captain Folio said part of the role of their command during the Valley summer is to make sure their own firefighters don’t succumb to the heat.

Brush fire threatens homes near Gig Harbor highway

VIDEO: Towering pine trees, ignited by a brush fire, shot flames into the afternoon sky in Gig Harbor on Sunday as drivers on State Route 16 watched in awe. But the quickly-growing fire was a scarier sight for the several dozen residents in a neighborhood just steps away. For Maryanne Allen, a split-second decision seemed hardly quick enough when she woke up from her nap to find the air around her home thick with smoke.

Grant County crews battle wildfire near mobile home park, person arrested for reckless burning

Grant County District 13 firefighters battled a wildfire on Saturday near the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home park in the 17000 block of Highway 28. Firefighters said the fire threatened the east side of the park and help was requested from Ephrata Firefighters and Grant County Fire District 7. The fire was contained on both sides and natural barriers slowed the start of the fire.

Kids in Yakima drench police and firefighters in epic water battle for Special Olympics fundraiser

VIDEO/PHOTOS: It's not often you get to go one-on-one in a water fight with first responders. Today, that's exactly what kids in Yakima did for a good cause. Police and fire departments across the valley showed up for the second annual Cop and Fire on Top event. Kids got to test out their aim with squirt guns and firefighters didn't hold back either, pouring whole buckets of water on each other before heading back to the station.
