Fire Ops 101: Train like a firefighter for a day in Richland

Extricating someone from a car. Breaking down a door. Performing CPR. Those are just some of the tasks that firefighters have to be prepared for, beyond just fighting fires. People from all over the state of Washington got the chance on Friday to spend a day as a firefighter experiencing all the different scenarios these men and women have to be prepared for.

Valley Regional Fire Authority honors employees at annual awards banquet

Firefighter Gervase Henson and Battalion Chief Rudy Peden earned top honors at the Valley Regional Fire Authority’s annual awards presentation March 2 at the Auburn Golf Course banquet room. Henson received the Firefighter of the Year award and Peden was chosen Fire Officer of the Year for 2017. Henson, who began his career with the Legacy Auburn Fire Department in 2003, represents the VRFA on the King County Fire Training Association Community Outreach Team, influencing diversity awareness.

First responders can now file for workers' comp for PTSD

On Mar. 23, Governor Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 6214 into law, allowing first responders to file for workers’ compensation for post-traumatic stress disorder. Police officers, firefighters, and paramedics will all be eligible to receive workers comp for PTSD acquired on the job. Workers’ compensation claims for PTSD and other stress-related mental conditions are not allowed by state law.

Taylor County (WV) New Ambulance will Serve Residents in Rural Areas

According to Michelle Mayle, an Emergency Medical Technician with the squad, the new ambulance will help ensure that the first responders will be able to make to more rural areas of the county. "This is our second four-wheel drive unit that we have purchased, which will be put into our fleet rotation to better serve the residents and guests of Taylor County," she noted. "Winters can be harsh here, making roads harder and more dangerous to travel. The addition of a second four-wheel drive truck will make it easier for us to reach patients in a safer manner and will allow us to travel on roads that some of our other units wouldn't be able to pass." The truck, a brand-new Chevrolet 3500 Frontline Box Ambulance, has been outfitted with custom built cabinets, and sports the new logo and design of the Taylor County EMS.
