Spokane police and fire chiefs push back on sheriff's criticism of North Monroe project

Spokane’s police and fire chiefs said they are united in their support of a street renovation project on North Monroe Street, and do not share Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich’s concern that its design would hinder a downtown evacuation in case of emergency. “One hundred percent correct,” said Police Chief Craig Meidl, when asked if Monroe would suffice as an emergency evacuation route after it is reduced to three lanes from five.

Four New Fire Stations Get OK From Lincoln (NE) Design Committee

Designs for Lincoln's four new fire stations received high marks Tuesday from the city's Urban Design Committee. Several months ago, the committee criticized the design for a fifth fire station being built near the Lincoln Airport to replace the existing Station 11, and suggested the city bring better-looking, more inspiring building designs for future stations.
The design for Station 15, which will serve as both a fire and police station at 6601 Pine Lake Road, already has a distinctive entrance. The architects should be more creative with the other three entrances, committee members suggested.

"These are important civic buildings. I don't think it needs to be camouflaged. I think a little bit of design flair, especially at the entry would be nice," said Gill Peace.

Kauai Fire Department (HI) Warns Operators to Keep Drones Away from Emergency Operations

The Kauai Fire Department is reminding the public to keep drones away from emergency situations. Anyone who flies an unmanned aircraft system during an emergency response operation without authorization could be breaking the law and may be subject to significant fines.
"During recent brush fires and air rescues, there have been several drone sightings that came relatively close to our Air 1 helicopter," said Fire Chief Robert Westerman. "I'd like to remind everyone that flying drones near any fire operation is not only against federal regulations, it is very dangerous for the helicopter and personnel on board."

Toronto Fire Apparatus Equipped with Naloxone Kits

A drug that can help reverse the effects of an opiate overdose will now be carried on board all Toronto fire trucks. Toronto Fire Services announced on Wednesday that all of its front line trucks have now been outfitted with Naloxone kits.
"We play a critical role in pre-hospital care in Toronto and we want to make sure at the end of the day that if we have an opportunity to save a life by administering this drug that we are prepared to do that," Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop told CP24. "We are blessed with the most robust paramedics system in Ontario but at the end of the day more often than not our firefighters are first on scene for these sorts of calls."

Jessop said that all 3,000 firefighters with Toronto Fire Services have been given two hours in theoretical training and one hour in hands-on training on when and how to use Naloxone.
