Crews continue to fight Archer Mountain Fire

As he stood along a recently cleared access road south of Archer Mountain, Chris Werner’s eyes remained glued to a few small flames that crackled as they danced on the forest floor about 10 feet away from him. “At any time, anything can happen,” he said. “You always have to be ready.” It’s tedious work, but Werner spent Wednesday keeping the flames from getting too high and spreading past the south line of the wildfire, which has grown to about 75 acres in the two days since it sparked from the Eagle Creek Fire raging in Oregon.

Tacoma home erupts in flames with 93-year-old woman inside

Minne McClarron was suddenly awakened early Tuesday morning by a loud explosion and flames burning just feet from her Tacoma home. “By the time I got to my granddaughter’s bedroom, the whole house was glowing,” McClarron told KIRO 7 Wednesday. The 93-year old McClarron, who has owned her home on the corner of South 52nd and Fawcett Avenue since 1969, said the fire that scorched her front yard was not the first time homes near Stewart Middle School have apparently been targeted by a firebug.

Jolly Mountain firefighters: 'Protecting homes can become an obsession'

In the Morgan Creek neighborhood, about 10 miles north of Roslyn, firefighters work around the clock to protect 33 homes. "You can see the fire is right in here," said firefighter Kale Casey as he walked through the neighborhood. "It's trying to chunk its way down this road, and it's definitely right up there," he said pointing uphill into the brush.
