A Key Largo firefighter who came close to death trying in vain to save three underground utility workers felled by noxious fumes beneath a neighborhood street last January is suing those men’s employers for negligence.
Leonardo Moreno, 32, an eight-year veteran of the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department, did not hesitate before descending 15 feet into a manhole on Long Key Road in the Lake Surprise Estates subdivision Jan.

Firefighters dealing with certain cancers will have more time to file for accidental disability retirement benefits under a bill signed into law late Wednesday by Gov. Cuomo.
The bill extends the filing deadline to five years, up from two. It will retroactively apply to all disability retirement applications filed since Jan.

While Clallam County Fire District 3’s $9 million budget next year may be balanced, leaders within the department said they likely need the public’s help to keep from operating in a deficit in the years to come.
Fire commissioners told Fire Chief Ben Andrews they seek more information for a possible levy lid lift in November 2018 to put the Sequim-area fire district on more solid ground.

At just 23 years old, Zachary Oehrke knew how his life would end.
"I told myself I was going to die a heroin addict," he said. "I told myself that was going to be my fate."
His fate changed forever at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on November 2. He overdosed on heroin in the bathroom, and Port of Seattle Fire Captain David Washington saved his life.
