Eight decades after a New York City firefighter's death, his family says the Fire Department needs to finally acknowledge his sacrifice — and they're ready to take their case to court.
Firefighter Thomas O'Brien responded to a two-alarm blaze on W. 26th St. in October 1935. He returned to Engine Company 3, and was found dead in his bed at the W.

Several escaped a burning apartment home Thursday morning, just three months after Springfield firefighters installed smoke alarms in the structure.
The smoke alarms sounded, notifying residents in two first-floor apartment of a fire that engulfed the second floor apartment Thursday morning.
During a safety canvass in June, firefighters installed a new smoke alarm and replaced a dead battery in another alarm in that building.

Firefighters responded to a semi-truck fire on U.S. 97, Blewett Pass Thursday evening.
Crews from Chelan Co. Fire Districts 3 and 6 were called to the scene near milepost 169.
When they arrived, the semi truck and trailer were engulfed in flames.
No word yet what caused the semi and trailer to catch fire, but another small fire could also be seen across the road.
