City Of Oakley Settles With Shea Homes Over Fire Station

The City of Oakley recently finalized a settlement with Shea Homes over the builder's alleged failure to construct a fire station. Shea Homes will give the city $3.7 million to build a fire station at the corner of East Cypress Road and Summer Lake Drive for use by the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD).

The city filed a lawsuit against Shea Homes last year, claiming that Shea agreed in 2006 to have a functional station constructed in the area by the time 600 homes were built in the Summer Lakes development near East Cypress and Bethel Island roads but failed to do so.

Fire Chief Brian Helmick said in a press release that the agreement sets out the minimum requirements, size and features of the new station and engine, but the city and district plan to work cooperatively on more specific and detailed plans and timelines.

Bondsville was awarded the William J. Flannery Memorial Cup for Best Lighted Fire Truck during the Spencer Parade of Lights Dec. 2, the department said in a statement.

"The Bondsville Fire Department would like to thank all of the members of the Spencer Celebration Committee and Spencer Fire Department," the statement said.

Tucson Fire chief announces retirement after 29 years with department

Tucson Fire Department Chief Jim Critchley announced his retirement Thursday after six years as head of the department. Critchley sent out a memo to Tucson Fire Department personnel Thursday saying he loved his job, but decided to retire and focus on his family, department spokesman Julian Herrera said.

Jury awards former Florida firefighter $245,000 in discrimination case

A jury awarded a former firefighter $245,000 in damages Thursday, deciding she had proved two allegations in her federal lawsuit against the city of Tampa: That she was discriminated against because she was pregnant and the city retaliated against her when she complained. But on the third allegation, the seven-person jury did not find that the city discriminated against Tanja Vidovic because of her gender.
