Winners of poster contest lunch with Clarkston Firefighters

All this week local elementary schoolers are getting the chance to see what it's like to be part of the Clarkston Fire Department, and it's all part of an annual educational program. The program starts during fire prevention week, when the students are given a presentation on fire safety. They are then presented a theme and asked to draw posters.

Spokane Firefighters return home after helping fight N. California fires

Spokane Firefighters returned to Spokane Tuesday night after 11 days helping combat the fires that devastated Northern California. Crews from Spokane Fire Protection District 8, City of Spokane Fire, and Chelan Fire and Rescue went out to California and got a firsthand look at the destruction and damage caused by the wildfires that burned across the state.

Department of Natural Resources has 20-year plan to help protect forest against wildfires

With over a month of burning and over a thousand acres blacked, the Jolly Mountain fire was one of the major blazes the state of Washington faced. James Schroeder, the Nature Conservancy, said the health of the forest had its part to play. "On August 11th, natural lightning came through, ignited the Jolly Mountain fire and then the conditions were just primed for a 37,000-acre forest fire," he said.
