Massachusetts Fire Chief ‘can’t go cold turkey,’ accepts New Hampshire job

Concord Fire Chief Mark Cotreau will become the next fire chief in Rye, New Hampshire. Selectmen in the seacoast community approved a three-year contract July 24 paying Cotreau $83,200 annually, according to Rye Town Administrator Michael Magnant. His first day on the job is Sept. 11. “The two words we kept hearing were ‘integrity’ and ‘honesty,’” Magnant said of responses from people the town interviewed during a background check on Cotreau.

North Carolina fire department leaders work to rebuild following a troubling fiscal audit

One local fire department made some major changes after going through a six-month audit in 2016 that garnered a lot of attention. Hubert Volunteer Fire Department was put in the spotlight both locally and with online firefighter websites when Onslow County withheld quarterly funds from them pending the submission of a correct audit, according to the department’s chief, Joseph Williams.

Kansas Woman Tries to Kill Bug with Lighter

A woman in Topeka, Kan. tried to kill a bug with a cigarette lighter. She wound up setting her apartment on fire, forcing an evacuation of the building and causing extensive damage. Topeka Fire Marshal Mike Martin confirmed that the blaze, which caused $140,000 in damages and the displacement of 17 people, resulted from an "occupant trying to kill a bug with a lighter."

Monique Quarles told the Topeka Capital-Journal that shortly before 3:45 Monday morning, her daughter Ausha Scott and 2-year-old granddaughter were on the third floor of their Fairlawn Green apartment complex.

In a video interview with the Capital-Journal, Quarles said her daughter alerted her to the bug. “I found the bug, picked the bug up and I put it in my hand and lit it on fire,” Quarles said.
