Part of Highway 99 tunnel project halted over weekend after worker fell from scaffold

Work has stopped on part of the Highway 99 Tunnel project after a worker fell 15 feet from a scaffold over the weekend, according to Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP). It happened early Saturday in the south portal of the tunnel. STP said the worker was on a scaffold which tipped over, causing him to fall.

Firefighters work to put out fire at lumber yard in Newman Lake

Spokane Valley fire crews responded to a commercial structure fire at Premiere Lumber in Newman Lake on Monday afternoon. It was quickly upgraded to a working fire to allow for more backup units to respond. The fire was reported around 3 p.m. on Kildea Road in Newman Lake. Crews say there were actually two separate fires on the property.

'Departments are strapped, we need help:' State faces shortage of volunteer firefighters

The high fire danger and smoky air are combining for a dangerous shortage of volunteer firefighters. The emergencies are out numbering the available crews and volunteer departments are being pushed to the limit. Crews with Riverside Fire in Puyallup said their numbers are dangerously low. "To be honest, volunteer departments are strapped and we need the help," said volunteer fire fighter Caleb Carr.

Mercersburg (PA) Fire Company Gets $142K Grant for Fire Apparatus

The fire company serving Mercersburg and the surrounding area has received a large grant from the Department of Homeland Security to cover the cost of new equipment. U.S. Representative Bill Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg, announced this past week that the MMP&W Volunteer Fire Company received a Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $142,858.
"Serving three townships and borough is a difficult task, but it’s even more difficult when you don’t have safe equipment," said Rep. Bill Shuster, in a news release. "I’m excited to share the news that the volunteers of MMP&W will be receiving the necessary funds to acquire a new brush truck so they will be better able to serve Mercersburg and the surrounding area."
