Norman Fire Station No. 5 welcomes new fire engine

Norman Fire Department Station No. 5 has been looking forward to getting a new fire engine for a hot minute. The wait is now over. "It's an excellent engine. The equipment we're getting is outstanding," Station 5 Capt. Chris Burn said. In 2008, Norman residents voted to make a temporary half-cent public safety sales tax permanent in April 2014.

In addition to being able to navigate rough terrain, the engine has a better water drafting system than the in-town engines have, Burn said. It also has a 750-gallon water tank.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Wilson said a typical engine is in service for about 15 years before it is moved into the reserve fleet. The previous engine at Station No. 5 was in its 12th year and was a hand-me-down from another station.

New Fire Engine Fleet Hits Streets Of OKC

In an unprecedented purchase for the Oklahoma City Fire Department, 20 brand new engines are ready to respond to emergency calls. Firefighters say they've been waiting in anticipation for the past year and a half. That's when the process of purchasing the new engines began.

“Everybody is smiling as they’re walking around and training and seeing the new features, and it’s a wonderful thing,” says Battalion Chief Benny Fulkerson.

Taxpayers funded the trucks through the MAPS 3 sales tax. They cost around $500,000 a piece, but they come with all the bells and whistles.

The trucks are equipped with more horsepower, brighter LED lights and far more advanced technology than their predecessors. They each include safety features like seat belts and door sensors as well as back-up and turn signal cameras.

“It gives you a little pride and ownership when your equipment looks brand new,” says Capt. Brad Tobin. “You’re going to take extra care of it.”
