A volunteer firefighter in Lancaster County is being credited with saving the life of his 5-year-old son, after the boy slipped away from his family and nearly drowned in a backyard pool. It happened shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday at a family birthday party in the Unity community, just south of the state line, reports the Lancaster News.

Pittsburgh City Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to advance legislation that would provide training for 100 firefighters to operate a $542,750 fireboat the city ordered from Lake Assault Boats of Superior, Wis., this year. An elderly woman was hospitalized and 4 family pets died when a Cowlitz County home caught fire Wednesday morning, officials said. A woman who lives in the home on the 100 block of Yelton Drive said she was woken up when she heard an explosion just after 4 a.m., Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said. The woman said she got her elderly mother out of the house and called for help.

Pullman Fire Department released a statement Wednesday night saying an accidental fire caused by a discarded cigarette burned down a two story duplex. Fire crews were called to a duplex on Northwest Sunrise Drive after a neighbor told 911 operators that he could see flames and smoke coming from the upper unit of the house.
