Texas State University research finds medical tests may help save firefighter lives

Firefighters are dying on the job from heart attacks more than any other risk they face, but researchers and firefighting professionals say increased focus on physical fitness with annual medical and fitness testing could increase their resiliency. Heart disease and other cardiac issues have long been recognized as significant health risks for firefighters.

Man rescued by Marysville Fire Department after truck plunges 15 feet down embankment

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Marysville fire rescued a man after his truck fell roughly 15 feet down an embankment at a transfer station Tuesday morning. Marysville fire said that the truck fell down the embankment at around 11 a.m. on 19th Ave NE. Officials worked for over 20 minutes to rescue the man, who they believed to be in his 60s.

Dozens displaced after fire damages Kirkland apartments

VIDEO: A fire at a Kirkland apartment complex forced about 30 people from their homes. The fire at The Preserve at Forbes Creek complex, at 10707 111th Court, was reported at around 6 a.m. Tuesday. Nicole Valdez, who lives on the ground floor of the multi-story building, said she called 911 as soon as she realized something was wrong.

Firefighters faced bees, wasps, poison oak on Tunnel 5 Fire in Skamania County

Fire isn’t the only hazard firefighters have faced while battling the Tunnel 5 Fire burning in the Underwood area of Skamania County. Tunnel 5 Fire Public Information Officer Eric Hendrickson told KOIN 6 News that bees, wasps and poison oak have also been prevalent in the steep, wild terrain of the Columbia River Gorge.

Firefighters rescue kitten trapped in Pierce County storm drain

PHOTOS: Firefighters with West Pierce Fire & Rescue helped a wayward feline find its way out of a scary place. According to the fire department, over the weekend, a woman heard meowing coming from a storm drain and tried to help the kitten out herself, but had to call 911 when she couldn’t reach the small cat.
