MedStar Ambulance Service Using Lyft for Low-Priority Calls

For years now, nurses like Betsy Acker have been helping MedStar callers like Johnson determine if their conditions really require an ambulance. If they didn't, she'd call them a cab instead, paid for by MedStar, which would take them to urgent care or the doctor's office.
Sending cabs helped free up ambulances for more serious calls, and saved both MedStar and the patient time and money. But the customer feedback on the cab service wasn't great. MedStar did what so many others are doing, and turned instead to the ride-hailing service Lyft.

Why Send Fire Apparatus to do An Ambulance's Job?

In Chicago, like many cities, the fire department oversees both firefighters and paramedics who work on ambulances.
When a medical call comes in, dispatchers usually prefer to send ambulances. But there are half as many of those as there are firetrucks. And fire department spokesman Larry Langford says those ambulances can be super busy.

Chicago's not alone in facing these challenges. Most cities are seeing big drops in fire calls and big jumps in medical calls. But few are really reforming their departments to meet this changing emergency landscape.

New Bertie (NC) Ambulances Arrive

The nearly nine month effort by Bertie County to upgrade its Emergency Services 911 fleet finally rolled out here on Tuesday. Back in the spring of 2016, Bertie Emergency Services Director Mitch Cooper informed the County Commissioners regarding replacing some of the older ambulance units in the Bertie EMS fleet.
After some discussion that carried over to August and the new fiscal year, Bertie County began a discussion about working towards replacing old ambulances in the 911 fleet that had become cost prohibitive.

“We have been using ambulance vehicles that were purchased during the First Med bankruptcy, and used units purchased from various dealers,” said Bertie County Manager Scott Sauer at the time. “These units have gotten us through our initial startup, but are becoming more and more costly for the county to repair. We are also experiencing frequent breakdowns with these vehicles and are in desperate need of more reliable 911 ambulances.”

Torrington (CT) Man Turns Fire Apparatus into Hearst for Firefighters

A Torrington man turned a fire truck into a hearse to honor fallen firefighters after their deaths.
"One of the things I always wanted for myself when I take my last ride, and I'm not driving, is to ride on a fire pumper," says Jay Krause, who spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter in Unionville.

He says he fell in love with fire trucks and firefighting as a child, and that he still feels a deep connection to the work even though he's retired. So he bought an old fire truck and outfitted it to carry a casket so that firefighters and paramedics can be carried on board during their funeral processions.

Vancouver Fire Department celebrates 150th anniversary

This April, the Vancouver Fire Department celebrates 150 years of service to the community. To commemorate this landmark year, a mural by local artist Guy Drennan will be painted on the North wall of the Walgreen’s Pharmacy building, located at 2515 Main Street, this spring.
