Augusta County Supervisors decided at Wednesday's meeting to ask Fire-Rescue Chief Carson Holloway and County Administrator Tim Fitzgerald to negotiate with Staunton on paying for the calls Company 10 answers within Staunton's city limits, and on sharing E911 services with the county. Company 10 is actually located in Staunton — it lies near the Walmart and Lowe's shopping center on Richmond Road, about a half-mile from the city-county line.

Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Terry Kelley said recent numbers show that nearly half of the 1,200 annual call Company 10 responds to take firefighters to Staunton addresses.

Should the city not negotiate, Kelley said, then Augusta County will be forced to close the station and shift the 15 career firefighters to other county fire stations.

Autryville Mayor Larry Autry said the damage doesn’t come close to qualifying for FEMA relief, but the toppled trees around town are still a significant impact. He asked the Sampson County Commissioners and Emergency Management Division for assistance.

“They’re trying to hook me up with some state help, state funding to get that in place. They’re supposed to be making some phone calls this afternoon, and I hope that I’ll hear from somebody,” Autry said.

The fire chief set up an online donation page at GoFundMe.com as he waits to hear about insurance and aid from state agencies.

Causey said he thinks there will be some sort of help coming from state emergency funds, but he doesn’t know what may be available from funds previously established for flooding and wildfire relief.

He is the reason the agency's new $800,000 fire pumper is themed around violence prevention organisation White Ribbon Australia.

"About 18 months ago while undertaking white ribbon annual training, the penny started to drop for me that my daughter was actually under some domestic violence issues herself," Mr Burns said.

"As a family we decided to get to the bottom of it, and we are still going through that.

"What we wanted to do, because firefighters are role models in society is spread the big key message that domestic violence whether emotional or physical is not okay."

Discretionary city funds were also going to be used. But city officials were told by mechanics that the vehicle could not be salvaged, and the Sun-News reported that the project was scrapped last year.

Now, the city is revisiting the idea of completely restoring the 1930s fire truck, with the hope that it will be brought back to fully operational condition or put on display again for people to enjoy.

“It’s becoming more and more important for communities to preserve their history and past,” City Manager Stuart Ed said. "This fire truck has been sitting in a park and requires a substantial investment to be renovated and rehabilitated. So, I have instituted a new grant program where we’re actively pursuing external grant funding for special projects, and this fire engine is an example of what I believe to be a very lucrative opportunity to leverage external funding and grant funding and go compete for that funding and preserve a piece of Las Cruces history.”

The truck has airbags just like any other passenger car would. It also holds more water than the previous pumper. But you won't see the truck on any calls for the next couple of weeks because it has to be properly inducted into the station.

Jackson Fire Rescue Captain Robert Greif said there is a dedication ceremony planned for June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Station One in Jackson.
