Four Jersey City firefighters were injured tonight after the fire truck they were on collided with a NJ Transit light rail train in Downtown Jersey City. The light rail train derailed during the collision, leaving service on the rail line partially suspended in both directions during the evening rush.

The light rail incident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. at Sixth Street near Washington Blvd., just south of the Newport mall. The firefighters were on their way to an emergency call that came in at 7:01, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.
The three firefighters and the fire captain on the truck and the train's conductor were sent to Jersey City Medical Center, according to Morrill. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this time.
The fire captain had to be extracted from the truck, Morrill said. A source with knowledge of the incident said the captain was "really banged up."
