Apartments damaged in fire north of CWU campus in Ellensburg

Two apartments were severely damaged and at least two sustained smoke damage in a fire Saturday afternoon north of the Central Washington University campus in Ellensburg. Ellensburg Police Department was first on scene to the fire at Campus Village Apartments, 925 E. 18th Ave., just after 2 p.m., EPD Sgt.

Yakima Fire Dept. seeking federal grant to ease staffing problem

Several people from the Yakima Fire Department recently retired, leaving the department even more short-staffed. Now the fire department is seeking approval from city council to apply for a three-year federal grant to increase staffing. The SAFER grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would cover part of a firefighter’s salary for the first two or three years and then potentially the whole salary after that.

Yakima School District officials hopeful YV-Tech firefighter training program can reopen soon

Yakima School District officials are hoping to revive a firefighter training program at the district’s vocational school. The firefighting class, which district officials said has been offered for more than 10 years, shut down in January due to declining enrollment, district spokeswoman Kirsten Fitterer said.

Valley Center Fire Department (CA) Places Fire Apparatus into Service

The Valley Center Fire Department placed a 2000 Gallon CAL OES Tactical Water Tender into service for the Community, San Diego Region and the State of California. Under a cooperative agreement with CAL OES and San Marcos Fire Department, Water Tender 62 was re-assigned to Valley Center Fire when San Marcos Fire received a Brush Fire Engine from CAL OES.
Fire Chief Bret Van Wey and Fire Chief Joe Napier agreed that it would best serve the region by moving this tactical resource closer to the back country where water supply is limited and homes rely on tank water for their own fire protection until the Fire Department arrives.

Owner Ready to Turn Beaumont (TX) Fire Station into Home

Robert W. Phillips said he hopes he is in the "home stretch" of acquiring the City of Beaumont's old Fire Station No. 11 on Sabine Pass Avenue. Phillips began his effort to buy the 1931-built fire station last March, and the city approved his bid of $93,000 last July.

There was one condition. Phillips had to wait until the firefighters cleared out and moved into the new station at Royal and Park streets.

That move was delayed until problems with the new fire house's air conditioning unit were fixed. That is supposed to happen next week, said Fire Chief Anne Huff.
