Later this month, firefighters will have a new resource to tackle emergencies - a state-of-the-art truck. The $635,000 purchase was a year in the making for the St. Joseph Fire Department.
“This truck has a roll-and-go, meaning it can roll and pump water at the same time, so if you had a building collapse, or something of that nature, and you had to move the truck, they could do so without affecting the firemen that are using hoses off this truck,” said Mike Neylon, the fire department’s chief training officer.
Neylon said the truck features an aerial ladder that allows fire crews to quickly reach a building story or roof instead of using a ground ladder. He also said a flip of a switch can move the ladder upward and the outrigger is easier to deploy.
“An outrigger is a stabilizing system that we hydraulically put out to the sides of this vehicle to stabilize it from tipping,” Neylon said.

Snohomish County Fire District 1 recently welcomed its newest fire engine to Mariner Fire Station 11 in unincorporated south Everett with a rolling-in ceremony.
The rolling-in ceremony is a fire service tradition dating back to the 1830s. Part of the ceremony includes having firefighters push the new engine into the firehouse, a custom from the days of horse-drawn equipment, which could not be easily backed into the station by the horses.
