Firefighter cancer research: What's next

Research over the past couple decades has reported some mixed results about the relationship between firefighting and cancer, which has been used to argue against supporting firefighters who contract the disease. Recent research that has reviewed and combined data from previous studies, weighing the studies based on the size of the sample, has found increased risks for several different types of cancer.

Injured first responder property tax relief proposed in Florida

For 32 years, James "Rick" Beale put his life on the literal line, battling blazes to keep homes, properties and most importantly, lives safe. Although not injured or disabled himself, over those years, Beale knows other fellow firefighters around Polk County, Florida and the United States weren't as fortunate and ended their careers permanently disabled from a work-related incident.

South Kitsap Fire van will help firefighters during a call

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue soon will debut a new mobile rehab unit in an effort to shore up an aspect of fire service many don't think about: the health of the firefighters on the ground. The rehab unit is a modified transit bus formerly used by the Yakima Fire Department to keep its firefighters rested, fed and hydrated.

Spokane Fire Department hiring 48 new firefighters

The Spokane Fire Department is looking to hire nearly 50 firefighters and the addition won't cost taxpayers. The money is all coming from a federal grant. Recruits in the Spokane Fire Department must complete strenuous tasks in simulated building fires. Breaking down doors and dragging dummies are just some of the tests included in the 13 week fire academy.
