Mt. Pleasant (TN) Welcomes New Fire Apparatus

The refurbished truck was purchased from Lawrenceburg's M3 Fire Apparatus for $139,000 following approval by the city's board of commissioners earlier this year.
The department has received its new firetruck, a 2004 Rosenbauer Spartan complete with a 60-foot extension ladder and remote controlled nozzle.

"The citizens of Mt. Pleasant should be glad we got this truck," Fire Chief Tim Smith said. "This is something we thought we would never see, but now that it has happened, we guarantee the City of Mt. Pleasant will make good use of it."

Smith said the new truck and its 60-foot extendable ladder will give firefighters much needed access during emergency situations at the city's public schools, three story homes and industrial facilities, which are steadily growing in number.

With the new nozzle, which can be used to direct water remotely using a small wireless controller, the new truck allows firefighters to work in a more secure environment for safer rescues and water drops.

In comparison, the city's tallest ladder before the new truck's arrival extended to 35 feet. Most significantly, the new vehicle will dramatically decrease the city's response time to fires, as it would previously take between 25-30 minutes for a similar truck to travel to the city from the Columbia Fire Department.

The truck, which is usually priced at more than $500,000, was used by a fire department in Ohio until it was damaged in a collision. It suffered minor cosmetic damage in the rear of the vehicle and has since been completely repaired and renovated by M3.

Mt. Pleasant Commissioner Ricky Frazier previously called the purchase a bargain which the city would otherwise have difficulty affording.

Finance Director and City Recorder Loretta Garner said the fire department's yearly budget of $36,000 set aside for vehicle maintenance and repair will cover the annual $24,000 payments over a six-year period.

Including the new addition, MPFD will have a total of three operating trucks with the combined capacity to run 3,500 gallons of water per minute to a burning structure. The new truck will replace an aging Grumman model that has been used by the department for 27 years and has a broken pump.

Three Rhode Island Municipalities Get $1.6 Million to Buy Fire Apparatus

Three Rhode Island municipalities have been awarded federal funding so that each can buy a new fire truck. The state's congressional delegation announced that Central Falls, Exeter and Woonsocket were awarded a combined $1.6 million through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The Central Falls Fire Department will receive about $475,000 to help replace their current 1988 Pumper Fire Apparatus. It's no longer operational and the repair costs are estimated at above the truck's value.

A volunteer fire department in Exeter will receive about $445,000 to purchase a new pumper engine. The Woonsocket Fire Department will receive about $680,000 to purchase a new aerial ladder truck.

Fire departments in Lincoln, Narragansett and Pawtucket were also awarded a combined $385,000 in grants to buy new equipment.

Michigan Driver Jailed in Fatal Fire Apparatus Crash in Minnesota

The driver of a firetruck that crashed Saturday on Interstate 35W in Blaine, killing two firefighters, has been arrested on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide for his role in the incident.

Micheal Allen Johnson, 28, was among nine Baraga (MI) firefighters going to help fight the Box Canyon wildfire in Utah when the truck "left the roadway for an unknown reason, struck the median cable barriers, and rolled" at 3:08 p.m., according to the State Patrol’s statement. The crash closed the freeway near 95th Avenue for the afternoon.

Twenty-three-year-old James Shelifoe and 25-year-old Alan Swartz were killed in the crash. The driver was among the seven injured. The State Patrol says the truck left the highway, struck the median cable barriers and rolled.

The crew was from the Baraga-based Beartown Firefighters, which is managed by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The crew was headed to fight the Box Canyon wildfire in Utah.

Dr. David A. Greene Receives IFSJLM Annual Research Symposium Oklahoma State University Student Presentation Prize

Dr. David A. Greene

The International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM) announced that Dr. David A. Greene received the IFSJLM Annual Research Symposium OSU Student Presentation Prize. Dr. Greene was recognized in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the annual IFSJLM Research Symposium. During the opening session, Dr. David A. Greene received the Prize and presented a paper on the findings of his recent dissertation research.

Dr. Greene’s presentation, “Assessing Member Satisfaction within the Volunteer Fire Service in South Carolina” was well received and generated many questions from the Symposium participants. Below is a brief description of his paper:

This presentation examines satisfaction levels among volunteer firefighters and is based on a study to determine what motives exist to join the volunteer fire service, how these motives alter and map expectations for continued service, and how well volunteer departments are meeting these expectations. The study offers recommendations that fire service leaders can use to improve volunteer recruitment and retention.

Dr. Greene has over 25 years of experience in the fire service and is currently the Deputy Chief with Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue. He holds a Ph.D. in Fire and Emergency Management Administration from Oklahoma State University, a Master of Business Administration Degree from the University of South Carolina, a Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of Charleston, and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Pikes Peak Community College.

Dr. Greene serves on the editorial board and is a regular contributor to the Carolina Fire Rescue EMS Journal. He is a certified National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer and holds the Chief Fire Officer Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence among other national and international memberships, licensures, and certifications.

The visuals from Dr. Greene’s keynote address can be seen at this link: https://www.ifsta.org/sites/default/files/rs-2016-greene.pdf

The Prize is made possible by a gift to the Oklahoma State University Foundation by Dr. John Granito and his daughter Michele Conners. The Prize allows an Oklahoma State University student in the Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology undergraduate program or the Political Science Fire and Emergency Management Administration graduate programs (MS or Ph.D.) to attend the Research Symposium held annually in July in Oklahoma. The student selected receives a cash prize, lodging at the symposium hotel, and the opportunity to present a paper on a topic related to fire leadership and management as part of the Research Symposium.

IFSJLM delivers the Annual Research Symposium on the Saturday prior to the opening session of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) Validation Conference (see http://www.ifsjlm.org). The IFSJLM, the research symposium and the IFSTA Validation Conference are sponsored by Fire Protection Publications (FPP), the world’s leading publisher of fire-related training and educational materials located at Oklahoma State University.

The Research Symposium 2017 will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017. For more information about past or future Research Symposia, please contact Dr. Robert E. England, Founding Editor, International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management at bob.england@okstate.edu.
