City moves ahead with new fire station plans | The Vicksburg Post

City officials hope to begin construction of a new fire station at the intersection of Berryman Road and Maxwell Drive before the winter rains set in. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Tuesday authorized City Clerk Walter Osborne to advertise for bids to build the new station off East Clay Street. The bids are expected […]

An artist’s rendering of the 5,110-square-foot fire station called “Vicksburg Fire Department Station 3,” shows a brick building with a metal roof and three bays for vehicles that will open on Berryman Road. According to the bid specifications and architect’s floor plans, the third bay is optional if the project bids are underbudget. The extra bay would add an additional 1,360 square feet to the station.

Atkins said plans for the station include having a pumper, aerial truck, rescue truck and ambulance.

City officials have discussed building a new station in east Vicksburg for several years to have better and quicker access to accidents on Interstate 20, the multi-story hotels in the Clay Street area and Merit Health River Region Medical Center, which falls under the fire department’s responsibility.

Ambulance Crashes En Route to Shooting

A 31-year-old man was booked early Friday on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with a killing in northeast Omaha. Police accused Jeffrey Loving of shooting to death a man Thursday who was the city's third homicide victim in three days and the second man to be slain in the same area.

The ambulance that crashed was headed to 30th and Read Streets when the crash occurred, said Omaha Police Sgt. Jason Menning.

The ambulance was eastbound on Ames with lights and sirens on, while the pickup was northbound on 31st, witnesses said.

The ambulance drove through a red light at 31st and the two vehicles collided. The driver of the pickup, 62-year-old Robert Hollis, was ejected, according to a press release from Omaha police. He was taken to Creighton University Medical Center with life-threatening head injuries. He was listed in "extremely critical" condition on Friday at the hospital.

After the crash, the front of the pickup was pressed against a light pole on the south side of the street, the pole leaning over. The door of the pickup truck was open and appeared to be smashed in.

The ambulance was on the north side of the street, up against a curb on the edge of a strip-mall parking lot, its front end badly damaged.

Local Departments Donate Fire Truck, Gear to Nicaragua Firefighters

anvplayer video="WBAY:1016236"] GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- Dozens of firefighters in Northeast Wisconsin are joining forces to help make the work of fellow firefighters in Central America a little easier and a lot safer.

It may not look like a state of the art truck to us, but this 1970 tanker is about to go back into service.

The Abrams Fire Department doesn’t use the truck anymore, so it’s donating it to firefighters all the way in Nicaragua.

“They’re very, very spread out, very mountainous, very hard to get to, so this six-wheel drive truck that Abrams Fire Department is furnishing to them is going to come in very handy for them up in the mountainous area,” says Green Bay Metro Fire Captain Eric Johnson.

Through the Firefighters United Project of the Wisconsin Nicaragua Partners, the truck and dozens of pieces of equipment and old gear are on their way south.

Green Bay Metro Firefighters loaded up some 50 sets of turnout gear Thursday morning. They’re more than 10 years old and considered expired by U.S. safety standards, but firefighters think they’re too good to just throw away.

“There’s still a lot of life left in it. There’s firefighters down in Nicaragua that aren’t so fortunate to have the gear that we have here in America and may not be useful here, but down in Nicaragua, they’re going to get a lot of use out of it,” says Johnson.
