The driver of a pickup truck was transported to Rhode Island Hospital on Wednesday night after running a red light on Route 18 south of downtown and colliding with the city's Ladder 3 fire engine, police said.
Detective Capt. Steven Vicente, a spokesman for the New Bedford Police Department, said Ladder 3 was traveling west on Potomska Street, crossing Route 18, when it was struck by a Chevrolet C-1500 pickup that ran a red light at Potomska as it was heading south on Route 18 at about 8 p.m. The truck suffered heavy front-end damage and came to rest on the center median of Route 18, knocking down a traffic light pole. Ladder 3 also was damaged in the accident.
