Washington's wildfire season got off to an abrupt and early start this month when two separate blazes tore through dry, steep forest, fueling worries about what lies ahead.
Fire officials say they were surprised to see wildfires burning this early west of the Cascades Mountains, particularly one that scorched nearly 300 acres about 60 miles from Seattle.

Emergency personnel with County Fire District No. 2 rapelled down a slippery ravine to a stranded and injured hiker at Sol Duc Falls during a difficult, hours-long rescue.
The man, Josh Reciert, 30, of Lynnwood, was transported to Olympic Medical Center at 3 a.m. Saturday and later sent to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was listed in satisfactory condition Saturday afternoon.

The Seattle Fire Department took time to stop and remember and draw attention to a heartbreaking problem that's becoming more prevalent.
The department says nationwide, firefighters are four times more likely to take their own life than to die in the line of duty.
