Clinical cases of Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent threat, nearly doubled in 2021, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was also a tripling of the number of cases resistant to echinocandins, the first-line treatment for Candida auris infections.

Three fires that ignited overnight Monday into early Tuesday morning all happened in vacant buildings. One was in Auburn, one in Tacoma, and a third in the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle, which has numerous vacant buildings. The building that burned down in the Rainier Valley neighborhood was a vacant 7/11.

A firefight at an abandoned building in Tacoma sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air on Tuesday. Firefighters have been battling the flames at South Fawcett Avenue and South Seventh Street since about 7 am. Tuesday. The fire was still going as of noon. Tacoma Fire said that people who live in the area should avoid going outside and keep doors and windows closed until the fire is out.
