Several students and staff had to be evacuated Monday at WSU Tri-Cities after a small explosion and fire. It happened just before two in the afternoon inside the Bioproducts, Sciences and Engineering Laboratory. The school says there was a minor fire after a cylinder of compressed gas exploded unexpectedly.

At 1:38 a.m., Valley Regional Fire Authority firefighters were called to the 1100 block of 26th Street Southeast for a report of a residential fire. The Carpenter Road fire is the single biggest disaster to hit Stevens County. The fire racked up $20 million in damages after ripping through 45,000 acres of county land and another 20,000 acres on reservation land. A total of 42 structures burned, including 18 homes. One man died of a heart attack while trying to escape the flames.
