Jesse Daniel Clingenpeel always wanted to be a soldier. He dressed in camouflage every Halloween and imitated his father’s buzz cut as a child.
But a year after a combat injury led to his honorable discharge from the Army in 2012, the Roanoke County native eagerly joined up as a Roanoke firefighter-EMT, Chief David Hoback said.

The FDNY will graduate one of the most diverse classes in its 150-year history Friday — and bring the number of women on the force to a record high.
Four women will cross the stage at Queens College on Friday to become probationary members of the Bravest.
When they do, the FDNY will have 49 female firefighters — more than it has ever had since the agency was formed in 1865.

Tempers flared Thursday night at a Foster Falls community meeting as representatives for the new Jasper Highlands development tried to convince the local fire department to respond to emergency calls while the developers construct their own fire department.
By the end of the meeting, which was filled with shouting and accusations, nothing changed.

It may have been 20 years since the Oklahoma City bombing, but those first responders who came together on April 19, 1995 are still making an impact today.
A memorial badge was created in their honor to benefit the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation received more than $75,000 Thursday morning after a limited time badge and coin were created.
