Jason Waldeck sometimes slept at the Ellis County firehouse where he volunteered, just to be sure he wouldn’t miss a call. A Mosinee firefighter accused of taking a fire engine on an early morning joyride and then crashing it after a night out drinking has resigned and his chief has requested that no criminal charges be filed in the case. In an effort to enhance diversification at the fire department, the personnel board on Wednesday voted to set aside the so-called “rule of three” to allow the fire chief to choose from a broader list of qualified candidates. A Mansfield man was arrested Wednesday after police alleged he tried to run over a firefighter and caused two crashes while fleeing from authorities. The driver, Kalvin Gross, 21, was believed to be under the influence of drugs during the pursuit, Mansfield police Sgt. Mike Napier said. It's clear Chiann James is still in shock. She's surveying the damage left behind by a fire in her duplex, a fire which almost killed her entire family. A neighbor's camera captured Chiann and her husband screaming for help Sunday night. And they got that help in the form of that same neighbor, Mark Hedgpeth, who rushed toward the flames.
