Firefighters Backburning To Save Holden Village From Wolverine Fire

The Wolverine Fire in north central Washington has burned up more than 30,000 acres. Hotshot crews are now trying to save a small Lutheran religious retreat center called Holden Village near Lake Chelan. Fire crews are not having a lot of success stopping or containing the Wolverine Fire burning on the northwest side of Lake Chelan.

Police: Brush fire in Port Townsend was started by 9-year-old with lighter

A Wednesday morning brush fire with flames that reportedly reached heights of 6 feet was started by a 9-year-old boy playing with a lighter, said Detective Luke Bogues of the Port Townsend Police Department. The case will be forwarded to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, Bogues said, because the flames damaged a flatbed trailer parked nearby.

Weather may help slow forest fire near Mount Adams

A forest fire burning southeast of Mount Adams more than tripled in size Wednesday to more than 5,000 acres. Cooler weather today could help, but it also brings the danger of more lightning storms, which could ignite more fires. Smoke from the fire and others is drifting into the Yakima Valley, where authorities warned it was unhealthy enough in places to cause problems for young children, the elderly and those with asthma.

Spokane: Haz-Mat situation at Pacific Steel; Possible ammonia leak

Spokane Firefighters were called to Pacific Steel Wednesday morning for a haz-mat investigation. Fire crews on scene say there was a chemical spill at the plant, possibly ammonia, and multiple workers were exposed. Spokane Police say workers were handling a barrel and it was punctured. Haz-mat crews are on scene investigating.
