Many residents are keeping an eye on East Contra Costa Fire District's financial struggles, but one of them recently took the scrutiny to a new level by chiding its chief for purchasing $23.96 worth of chocolate chip cookies.
"She just didn't think we should be buying treats for the firefighters," said Chief Hugh Henderson of the woman who took him to task after spotting four $5 boxes of cookies among the groceries he was loading into his truck from the Safeway store in Discovery Bay.

In a year when many people in Okanogan County were looking to recover from the largest wildfire in state history, nature came along and threw four more large fires at one of the poorest and most rural areas in the state.
The two fire seasons combined will long be remembered as one of the county’s worst natural disasters.

Three firefighters and a family of six, including two kids under 10 years old, are recovering after a potentially deadly gas seeped into a home in Issaquah.
Eastside Fire officials report that the youngest child is 17 months.
A house along Northeast Eagle Way had to be ventilated Saturday morning after gas seeped in.
