Sag Harbor (NY) Receives $100K Donation toward Much-Needed Fire Boat

The Sag Harbor Village Board was presented with a $100,000 check Tuesday to go toward the purchase of a new fire boat, 27east.com reported. The check was from Jack and Cheryl Morris, who own a house on Rysam Street.

The Sag Harbor Fire Department has been raising money for the purchase, which Trustee Tom Gardella said could exceed $600,000, for more than a year, the report said.

Last summer, the Sag Harbor Partnership sponsored a fundraising cookout at the Brick Kiln Firehouse that raised thousands of dollars. All told, with the Morris donation, the village has raised about $249,000, according to the report. That is nearly enough to match a $250,000 state grant that was originally intended to renovate the firehouse kitchen. With the help of State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., that grant money has been redirected toward the fire boat purchase.

Fire department leaders have argued that a fire boat is needed because of the number of marinas in the village, the possibility of boat fires occurring in the bay, as happened last year at least twice, and to help fight fires on waterfront homes, the report said.

With St. Lewis (Canada)’s Only Fire Truck Out of Service, Residents Watch Shed Burn

The St. Lewis mayor said with the community’s only fire truck out of service, they need new firefighting equipment, CBC.ca reported.

In emergencies, the town attaches a water pump to a volunteer’s truck, but the old truck doesn’t work anymore, the mayor said in the report.

A woman in the Labrador community of St. Lewis spoke up recently about the lack of fire services after nothing could be done to stop her son’s shed from burning down earlier this month, the report said. When the shed caught fire a call was made to the volunteer fire department, but was informed that they couldn’t do anything due to the fire truck being broke down and the pump being frozen, the report said.

Regarding the shed fire, the mayor said the fire brigade did show up and focused on preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings nearby, the report said.

The mayor said the town is working to move into a new fire house soon and is meeting in the next couple of weeks to ask for a new fire truck, according to the report.
