Two people from Washington among crews helping to fight devastating Australia bushfires

In the midst of the devastating bushfires engulfing Australia, more than 100 people from the United States have made the journey to help battle the blaze. In total, 164 people have either headed to Australia from the United States or are ready and waiting to do so. Of that total, two come from Washington.

Husband dies trying to save wife from fire in Kent

A husband and wife were killed Monday morning when a mobile home caught fire in Kent. Firefighters were called around 8:30 a.m. to the fire on the West Valley Highway just north of W. James St. A man who lives with a couple in the home saw the smoke and called 911. The husband returned home and went inside to try to rescue his wife who is disabled.

Woman dies after crashing car into Mountlake Terrace home

A young woman died Monday morning after she veered off the road in Mountlake Terrace, crashing through a telephone pole, a fence and into a house. The vehicle caught fire, and flames spread to the two-story home at 220th Street SW and 44th Avenue W, said Mountlake Terrace police Cmdr. Pat Lowe. The woman, estimated to be in her 20s, died at the scene.

Clark County Fire District 6 hires first female fire chief

Clark County Fire District 6 will make Kristan Maurer the first female chief in the district's history. She will be sworn in officially on Jan. 7. Just how rare are female chiefs? In the male-dominated profession of firefighting, there are only approximately 50 female fire chiefs across the 29,000 districts in the United States and around a half-dozen are in the state of Washington.

7 semis in Franklin County burst into flames

Multiple semis are destroyed after a massive blaze broke out at the Harms Pacific Transport property in north Franklin County. Firefighters responded to the fire at 3220 North Glade Rd. shortly before 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Arriving crews found semis on fire. Franklin County Fire District #3 upgraded to a second alarm, requesting more water tender trucks and manpower from fire agencies across the Tri-Cities.
