Yelm Area Man Named Chief of Napavine Fire Department

After more than three decades in firefighting, Yelm area resident Dan Mahoney has a title he’s never had before: chief. Mahoney became chief of Lewis County Fire District 5 in Napavine on Aug. 1 after spending his firefighting career — most of which was on a volunteer basis — at numerous departments throughout Thurston County.

Brush Fire Contained Near Umtanum Street in Yelm

The Southeast Thurston Fire Authority responded Monday afternoon to a small brush fire burning portions of dry grass and a tree off the Umtanum Street cul-de-sac in Yelm. No injuries were reported, though some neighbors reportedly began evacuation procedures as large flames climbed up a tree nearly 100-feet tall.

Update: Speeding caused fire truck rollover in Grant County, state patrol concludes

Sunday’s rollover of a fire truck belonging to Grant County Fire District No. 10 occurred because the vehicle was traveling too fast for conditions, according to the Washington State Patrol. First responders were dispatched shortly before noon Sunday to the area of Road I Northwest and state Route 26, about two miles west of Royal City, for reports of the rollover.

Mukilteo Fire Department names first female captain

VIDEO: For the first time, a woman has been promoted to captain at The Mukilteo Fire Department, and she's proving persistence pays off. As a young woman, Kelli McNees decided she wanted to be a firefighter, but she wasn't so sure how to get there. "I was like, don't you have to be 6'5'', with the shoulders of a linebacker to pull it off?" McNees said.

Police: 64-year-old man critically injured in Pasco fire started over family argument

A 64-year-old man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after suffering third-degree burns in a fire that was started over a family argument, according to the Pasco Police Department. Fires arrived to a home at 915 W. Opal St. around 11:43 p.m. Saturday and saw flames coming from the attic and back bedroom.
