Gainesville (MO) Fire Department, City Council Take First Steps Toward Disaster Recovery

At a special meeting of the Gainesville City Council Monday night, the council members took steps to help the Gainesville Volunteer Fire Department recover from a May 30 fire that destroyed almost all of the department’s vehicles and equipment. The council approved sending someone to inspect a pumper truck that has been offered for sale. It also authorized Gainesville fire chief Ed Doiron to send up to 10 sets of bunker gear (the firefighters’ protective clothing) that had survived the April 29-30 flood and was not damaged in the fire to be professionally cleaned and decontaminated.
Doiron told the Times that all the insurance adjusters have visited the site but have not yet given a final determination. The investigator is expected to return Monday, June 12, to complete his investigation.

Doiron said GVFD has “received may offers of donations for trucks and equipment, and we thank those fire departments and individuals that have contacted us with offers and donations. The fire service is a true family that helps each other in times of loss, both physical and emotional. We have bunker gear and some equipment coming, but I am holding off on most things until we have somewhere to store it. The city council has been supportive in our efforts to get up and running again.”

Longboat (FL) Talks Fire Station Upgrades

As the Town Commission sought to narrow its options for Longboat Key's south fire station, Commissioner Jack Daly asked Fire Chief Paul Dezzi what he'd rather see. "To be honest with you, Commissioner, I would say knock it down and rebuild a two-story fire station," Dezzi replied.
On Monday, Dezzi and architect Todd Sweet presented the Town Commission with five options to either renovate or rebuild the station, located at 2162 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Construction costs for three renovation options were estimated between $1.8 million to about $3.1 million, while construction costs for the two rebuilding options were estimated higher than $3.6 million. Dezzi’s recommendation was the most costly, estimated at nearly $4 million. Costs do not include permitting and inspection fees.

Phoenix Fire Department Builds Own Fire Apparatus

The Phoenix fire department got a little creative in their time of need. It needed a new engine, but the budget said "no."
They had a bunch of spare parts at their maintenance lot, so they made something happen.

80-percent of Station 18's calls are medical, so they created a truck specifically to respond to those emergencies.
