Kernersville (NC) Firefighters Are Restoring 100-Year-Old ALF to Mark Anniversary

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Kernersville (NC) Fire Rescue Department which is on for next year, firefighters are restoring a 1923 American LaFrance fire truck, according to a report published by WFMY News 2.

According to the report, the restoration of the fire department’s first engine has been on going for the last several months and firefighters expect to have it completed by next summer.

There have been some challenges restoring the antique apparatus, according to the report, which said the engine is being restored in Boston, the carburetor is in North Carolina and a couple of brass lanterns are in Connecticut being worked on.

When the restoration is completed, the engine, which cost $6,500 new, will be housed in the new fire station off Highway 66, according to the report.

Firefighters told to wear protective gear less to limit exposure to 'forever chemicals' linked to cancer

A firefighters union and a chiefs association are both warning members that the protective gear firefighters wear poses a health risk because it can contain PFAS, synthetic chemicals associated with issues such as an increased risk of liver and kidney cancer. PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they’re nearly impossible to destroy.

North Carolina fire rescue department restoring 100-year-old fire truck

VIDEO: Next November, the Kernersville Fire Rescue Department will celebrate 100 years of service in the Town of Kernersville. To help mark the day, the Fire Rescue Department is restoring a special piece of history. Over the last several months, the Department has been working to restore a 1923 American LaFrance Brockway Torpedo Fire Truck.

'It changed my life': Resident thankful for Washington firefighter who fixed up her house

VIDEO: Grandma Elsie” can’t stop bragging about the firefighter who changed her life. She’s in her 90’s and said a dramatic life twist came after accidentally setting off her Life Alert pendant. She wears it in case of emergency and one press will alert and dispatch help. The Monroe resident admits she didn’t realize she had activated her pendant when she was attempting to mow her lawn.
