We believe Benton County Fire District 1 does a solid job providing emergency medical service to people living inside the district’s boundaries, but it isn’t as good as it could be. That’s because it lacks its own ambulance service, and has to rely on other districts to fill that gap. Fire Chief Lonnie Click and his crew would like to change that, but it will take additional money.

Firefighters say an 89-year-old man has lost his house in Prosser due to a fire. Benton County sheriff's deputies and firefighters were called the the home just before 1 p.m., Monday. Reports said the 89-year-old homeowner discovered smoke and flames coming from the enclosed porch of the house. He tried to put out the blaze but fire quickly reached the attic and flames spread throughout the house.

Two worship centers operated by the Jehovah's Witnesses were damaged by fire Monday morning, and at least one was a suspected arson, fire officials said. Olympia firefighters responded to the first blaze, in the 2200 block of 22nd Avenue, at about 8:30 a.m. The blaze was extinguished, and crews then searched for hidden smoldering fires in the walls and ceilings.

Authorities say a fire destroyed an RV and killed a person inside early Sunday morning. The fire occurred on the 14000 block of North Griffin Road near Prosser. Officials say they originally got the 911 call at 1:45 AM. The caller reported the possibly-occupied RV was completely engulfed in flames.
