The report, published by the agency on Aug. 8, was based on death records from the National Vital Statistics System. A total of 3,090,582 deaths occurred in the U.S. in 2023, a decline of 6.

A house fire in Concrete, Washington, killed several people including a contract employee of Skagit County. Deputies from the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) were dispatched to a reported fire in a building in the 15000 block of SR WA-530 at approximately 10:24 a.m. on Aug. 9. A two-story home was destroyed by the fire, according to the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD).

Firefighters have spared every structure in Stehekin from the advancing Pioneer Fire, sometimes by a matter of a few feet. Not a single structure has been damaged according to California Incident Management Team 15 which led a Media tour into the area on Saturday. The team is the 5th assigned to the 37,850 acre fire since it started June 11th.

Roughly 99 wildfires in Oregon and Washington account for more than 1.7 million acres of land actively burning across the region, according to the latest fire report released by the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. The largest of the wildfires is the Battle Mountain Complex, which has burned 182,858 acres and is 78% contained as of Aug.

The Hutchinson Fire Department released a new video showing the intensity of a fire at a recycled mattress business on Tuesday. According to HFD, bystanders reported large amounts of smoke and fire coming from the business. Firefighters noticed a “large glow and smoke plume” as they left the station.
