Heading into the spring it is very popular for people to have controlled fires before wildfire season starts, but sometimes controlled burns can get out of control. Prescribed burns or controlled burns usually are done by setting planned fires to maintain the health of the environment or burning extra bush and debris that piled up throughout the season.

Spokane Valley tiny house caught fire after improper use of extension cords

An electrical fire destroyed a structure being used as a tiny home in the back of a property in Spokane Valley on Wednesday. The Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) said that they responded to the fire Wednesday morning at 3222 N. Elton after occupant's called 911. Emergency responders said the tiny house residents were sleeping when they woke up and saw the smoke and flames burning up the wall next to the electrical panel tiny house.

Cowlitz Fire District No. 5 Chief Vic Leatzow retires after 30 years with the Kalama department

When Vic Leatzow moved to the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1980s, firefighting wasn’t on his radar. Three decades and thousands of calls later, Leatzow, 56, is retiring Thursday from Cowlitz Fire District No. 5 after 30 years at the department, 18 as chief. For someone who didn’t plan on joining the fire service — and who had never been to Kalama before buying a house there — Leatzow has become a well-known and respected leader in the community and the fire district.
