Seven Fire Station Renovations, New Fire HQ Part of $66M in Wheeling (WV) Upgrades

The renovation of seven fire stations throughout the city as well as the construction of a new Wheeling Fire Department headquarters at 17th and Wood streets highlight a $66 million community improvement project, reports theintelligencer.net.

The new 26,000-square-foot facility will be the department’s main station, it will house ambulances and the pumper and ladder trucks. It will also feature offices and a training facility, the report says.

Officials say the fire HQ construction work is currently out to bid, with bid openings set for April 16. The money is coming in part from $29 million in pandemic relief and $28 million in still-available ARPA funds.

Other projects include citywide water and sewer investments, new neighborhood dog parks and other recreational facilities, the demolition of dilapidated structures throughout the city, slip repairs, police upgrades, a sidewalk-repair project, and other paving projects, according to the report.

Madera (CA) to Host Pandemic-Delayed Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Station 58

MADERA, CA – The City of Madera will host a long-awaited ribbon-cutting ceremony today, Wednesday, at 5:30 p.m. to officially commemorate the completion of Fire Station No. 58, the first new fire station built in Madera since 1978.

Station 58 is located at the southwest corner of Aviation Drive and Condor Avenue, just west of State Route 99. Designed with an architectural aesthetic inspired by the neighboring Madera Municipal Airport, the 9,020 square-foot state-of-the-art facility features three apparatus bays, a sleeping area for up to 10 personnel, a kitchen, a day room, an exercise facility, and a training room. Built with firefighter health and wellness in mind, the station includes safety features that reduce firefighters’ exposure to carcinogens and hazardous vehicle emissions and is also equipped with a HeartSmart fire department alerting system.

“Though we brought Station 58 online a little over a year ago, we didn’t feel like it was the right time to hold a proper community celebration marking the day,” said Councilmember Cece Gallegos. “This is the people’s fire station. Our community is invested in ensuring that public safety continues to be a top priority. We can’t wait to celebrate this beautiful new fire station with the people who made it possible, the residents of Madera.”

Fire Station No. 58, a new $6.5 million project funded by Measure K, a half-cent public safety sales tax passed by voters in 2016, is the first new fire station built in the city in more than 40 years.

Funding for construction of the station, a new Rosenbauer 102-foot aerial ladder truck, and assigned personnel comes from Measure K, a half-cent sales tax approved by voters in November 2016. Three full-time personnel, including (1) Fire Captain, (1) Fire Apparatus Engineer, and (1) Firefighter will staff the site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“Our fire family couldn’t be more grateful and honored to have the opportunity to officially unveil this new station for our Madera community,” said Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Watson. “Station 58 has reduced response times and increased protection for all Madera residents, greatly improving our ability to render services to our community when they need us most.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be dedicated to the public and include a plaque unveiling, flag raising, and color guard presentation. Guests will also be able to take guided tours of the station and get an up-close look at the new firefighting equipment.

Houston (TX) Fire Department Continues Replacing Aging Fleet

The Houston Fire Department’s Stations 4 and 19 have had their aging aerial ladder trucks replaced with brand-new 2021 Spartan ladder trucks.

The brand-new ladders are replacing units that were over 17 years old. The new Spartan ladder trucks are outfitted with a 105-foot, four-section steel ladder. They are configured with a unique outrigger design and placement to allow full operational capability on a 12% grade (downhill and uphill).

Each ladder is equipped with a best-in-class 750-pound tip load while flowing water. This feature aides in the efficiency of firefighting, allowing members to extinguish the fire and perform rescue operations simultaneously. The new ladder trucks are housed at stations 4 and 19.

Eastland (TX) Fire Department Seeks Donations for New Brush Truck

On the heels of the Eastland Complex fire, the Eastland Fire Department is making a plea for a new brush truck.

“The Eastland Fire Department has two ‘brush trucks’ in its fleet. These trucks are specifically designed for off-road fire attack in native pasture, agricultural fields , and urban interface environments. Compared to a rural fire engine, a brush truck is smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable. Superior maneuverability allows firefighters to operate in very close proximity to the active fire, as well as the ability to wet down areas around homes in the path of advancing flame fronts, all while remaining mobile and providing the means of escape for the firefighters on board. It is vital to the safety of firefighters, that brush trucks operate in teams of at least two, when suppressing large fires.

“During the recent Eastland Complex fires, one of our brush trucks experienced multiple mechanical breakdowns, which required it to leave the fire line repeatedly and rendered it useless for fire suppression or home protection. More importantly, these breakdowns compromised firefighter safety and put firefighters in jeopardy.

“This truck has been removed from service and we find ourselves in desperate need to replace it with a safe and reliable unit. We have been very blessed with public donations year after year and we greatly appreciate EVERY donation of ANY size. It is during times like we are currently experiencing, that the benefits of your generous donations are brought to bear. We are asking the public to help us with this urgent need by making a donation of any size. We are your Fire Department and we can’t do what we do, without you. If we all do a little, the collective benefit cannot be measured.

“Estimated cost to replace this truck is $150,000+

“Donations can be dropped off and mailed to 414 South Seaman Street in Eastland, Tx 76448.

“The Fire Department is also taking donations through venmo. @EastlandVolunteer-FireDepart-1”
