The life of a firefighter means being ready for anything. For some, the burden of tragic calls wears on them, which is why the Sandy Fire Department has made focusing on mental health a priority.
For Firefighter EMT Tyson Astin, trying to keep his identities separate is of the utmost importance.
“I don’t wear my uniform home,” he said.

Trading professional hockey for a career as a Rome, New York firefighter is working well for Tim Sestito.
Particularly for athletes, life can appear to move quicker than for people in other professions. For Sestito, grinding out a career in hockey for 13 seasons went in what seemed in a flash. Training camps, regular seasons, playoffs (including the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals with the New Jersey Devils), off-season workouts, the battle for a roster spot was a continuous competitive cycle.

Yakima firefighters have battled a lot of home and apartment fires so far this winter season. Many have been caused by space heaters and woodstoves. Earlier this month a 4-year-old girl was killed in a shed fire on Ahtanum. She was one of two children under the age of 5 that have died in fires this year in the state.

PHOTOS: A man was injured Monday morning when a car crashed into his Parkland residence and knocked a wall down on top of him, sheriff's officials said.
The driver who hit the house is now at large after fleeing from the scene.
Deputies, state troopers and medics responded to the residence, a duplex near 111th Street South and Sheridan Avenue, after receiving reports of a vehicle hitting a building, said Sgt.

PHOTO: Two people were injured in a fire after a propane tank exploded inside a mobile home Saturday afternoon in Vancouver’s Rose Village neighborhood. A dog and two cats were unaccounted for.
One person was taken to a hospital and another was being treated at the scene, according to Vancouver Fire Department spokeswoman Heidi Parr.
