Dedication Set for New NC Fire Station Named After Fallen Firefighters

According to a report from WBTV, the Salisbury (NC) Fire Department (SFD) will dedicate its new Fire Station #6—the Monroe and Isler Fire Station—on Sunday, March 7.

The station is named after SFD members Justin Monroe and Victor Isler, who died in the line of duty in 2008 fighting a fire at the Salisbury Millworks. Located at 310 Cedar Springs Road, the new station will house a training wing, the hazmat team, and the fire operations staff.

Planning for the new station started in 2017 to service areas in the growing, southern part of the city.

The families of the fallen firefighters will be present at the event.

A virtual “Open House” link will be available on the City of Salisbury Web site where “attendees” will be able to tour the fire station online. For more information on the dedication, visit salisburync.gov/Fire.

Sullivan’s Island (SC) Fire & Rescue Ready to Renovate Fire Station

According to a report from WCSC, the Sullivan’s Island (SC) Fire & Rescue (SIFR) is moving out of its current station, beginning after Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and completed in 1991, while it is renovated.

Most of the station will be torn down and rebuilt into a more modern facility similar to the Sullivan’s Island’s new town hall next door.

One of the most significant changes to the station will be the replacing of the overhead bay doors with bi-fold doors, also known as concertina doors, which are more common for fire stations because they open faster during an emergency response. SIFR Chief Anthony Stith said the new doors will also be hurricane resistant.

The project includes new living quarters with more bunk rooms for members, new meeting and exercise training rooms, and an elevator for access that was required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new barn structure will also include space for fire rescue boats, jet skis, lawn mowers, and other tools and vehicles.

There will also be a new storage building built behind the fire station for use by Sullivan’s Island maintenance and police departments.

Meanwhile, the SIFR will temporarily stay at the Fish Fry Shack as Station 15 is being rebuilt, which is expected to be completed by January 2022.
