Wapello (IA) City Council to Hire Engineering Firm for New Fire Station

According to a report from The Hawk Eye, seven weeks after transferring $37,000 of Local Option Sales Tax revenue into a capital improvements fund, the Wapello, Iowa, City Council agreed Thursday to hire Coralville engineering firm VSP Engineering to develop plans and other specifications for a new fire station.

The scope of services agreement will in two phases. Phase 1 will cost $2,500 and cover preliminary engineering, including 50 percent of the building plans (floor plan and building elevations), 25 percent of the site planning (site layout plan), and an estimate of probable costs (preliminary building and site).

Phase 2 will cost $15,000 and cover final engineering design and specifications, which will include bid documents, final construction plans, and project administration. Work not included in the scope of services is materials testing and/or construction inspection layout.

Wapello Mayor Shawn Maine indicated the agreement was developed following a meeting of city officials and Wapello Fire and Rescue (WFR) personnel, who have been lobbying for a new station for the past several years.

Maine said officials hope it will be easier to fund portions of development through LOST revenue and by breaking the project into phases. The city has earmarked half of the one-cent sales tax the city collects to the repayment of bonds used in the construction of the new Louisa County jail; Louisa County retired those bonds late last year, allowing the city to apply the half-cent to projects such as the fire station.

Swanzey (NH) voters to Vote on Fully Constructed New Fire Station

According to a report from The Sentinel Source, after Swanzey, New Hampshire, officials had proposed constructing an incomplete fire station to lower the cost, voters at the town’s deliberative session Wednesday night decided they didn’t want to settle for an incomplete station.

This year will be Swaney’s fourth attempt at voting for the new station to a vote since 2015. According to Swanzey Fire Department (SFD) Chief William Gould, the current central fire station is located in the basement of town hall and has fallen out of compliance with building codes. He also said SFD operations, at times, interferes with town business being conducted upstairs.

In the only change to the warrant, voters chose to amend the fire station proposal, which originally called for the town to raise $3,575,000 to fund the project, with $200,000 to be raised by taxes; $375,000 from an undesignated fund balance; and $3 million in bonds. However, the bonded amount may be raised, as was called for by Swanzey resident Joe Smith.

Last year, residents narrowly voted down a proposed 12,000-square-foot station, which also would have been built at 321 Old Homestead Highway (Route 32). Although a simple majority of voters favored the station, the measure failed to garner the required 3/5 majority. This year’s proposal would also require a supermajority to pass.

The town has two additional fire stations, both of which would remain open if the new facility is constructed.

Voting is scheduled for March 9 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Monadnock Regional Middle/High School gym.

New Fire Station Location is Proposed for Hatchville Area in Falmouth (MA)

According to a report from The Cape Cod Times, the location for a new fire station in the Hatchville area of Falmouth, Massachusetts, will go before a vote for final approval from the Falmouth Select Board on February 22.

The citizens’ advisory committee selected 860 Sandwich Road, next to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth and the George Gaspa Sports Complex, as the best location to address the emergency response coverage gaps in the Falmouth area.

Falmouth Fire Department Chief Timothy Smith said the proposed station would serve the northeast section of town, from Sandwich Road to the Mashpee border, as well as to Joint Base Cape Cod and toward the north.

A proposed warrant article for the April 12 Town Meeting will seek to appropriate money to fund the project management, determine the the station’s design and construction, and to consider how the money will be raised and spent. If Town Meeting voters approve the article, the town would soon get a construction cost estimate.

Select Board Chairperson Megan English Braga asked that the advisory committee research locations for another new fire station that could serve the North and West Falmouth areas.
