Sandy Springs (GA) Breaks Ground on Fire Station No. 2

Sandy Springs (GA) Fire Department yesterday broke ground on its Fire Station No. 2, according to a report in ReporterNewspapers.net, the first new building for the Fire Department since the city formed in 2006.

The new station will be located at the same location as its predecessor—135 Johnson Ferry Rd.—and the City Council has approved a $6.45 million contract with Reeves Young of Sugar Hill to construct the new building.

The original building, which was demolished in August 2020, opened in 1969 and had served the city of Atlanta and Fulton County before Sandy Springs formed.

The report added that design work has begun for Fire Station No. 5, which will be located on an acre of land at Mount Vernon and Spalding Drive in the city’s panhandle. The city aims to occupy the new Fire Station No. 5 by October 2023.

It’s better to give than receive—unless of course you’re the Southport (NC) Fire Department.

Last week, Southport’s Caswell Beach station dedicated its new 75-foot ladder truck, which was a gift from an anonymous donor, according to a report from StatePortPilot.com. The report noted that, with all its addition, the engine is worth about $450,000 and has only 6,000 miles of service on it.

The Caswell substation now has this larger ladder truck, two 1,000-gallon fire engines, a brush fire response truck, an air tank trailer, and at least two full-time firefighters are at the station around the clock, the report said.
