Why Every First Responder Department Should Have a Chaplain

Traditionally, chaplains’ roles have been ceremonial; they are called upon for banquets, funerals, blessings, and weddings. They are well-meaning and primarily volunteer people of faith, having a heart and hand in assisting first responders and their local agencies. But the days of the ceremonial chaplain are over if we genuinely want operational effectiveness.

Nonprofit to offer support dogs to North Carolina first responders

When Asheville Fireman Mark Jameson returned to the fire station after responding to a particularly difficult call, the only thing that lifted his spirits was seeing Denali wagging her tail with excitement upon his return. “We had a call that was DOA, dead on arrival,” Jameson said. “It was an older woman, lived by herself, no one had seen her for a while, and she passed.

Police: Roving band breaks into Seattle businesses, setting fires, looting

A destructive, roving band of people broke into several Seattle businesses Wednesday night and set fire to merchandise in some of the stores, police said. The group of about 150 people first gathered at Cal Anderson Park at about 9 p.m., then roamed about the Capitol Hill neighborhood, doing massive amounts of property damage, looting, shooting fireworks, and committing arson, according to police reports.

100-acre South Pine Fire forces evacuations in Okanogan County

A 100-acre wildfire reported Wednesday in Okanogan County near Tonasket is threatening structures and has led to evacuation notices, according to tweets from the Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team. The team reported level 2 evacuations were in progress in the area due to the South Pine Fire, as the blaze has been named.

Fire destroys barn in Brush Prairie

A fire destroyed a barn Wednesday in Brush Prairie. Clark County Fire District 3 crews were dispatched at 5:28 a.m. to Northeast 117th Avenue and 119th Street for a report of a structure fire. The first arriving crew found a barn in a field engulfed in flames, Fire Marshal Chris Drone said. Firefighters employed a defensive strategy, Drone said, dousing the flames from the exterior of the barn.
